Syracuse Bed Bugs Exterminators – How To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs
If you’re reading this you’ve probably gotten here because you have seen or been bitten by bed bugs. Writing a guide on how to get rid of bed bugs is something I have been thinking about for a while. As a company, we have made it a mission to try and give our customers and potential clients as much information as we can. Unlike most companies, we are not against clients understanding how to get rid of bed bugs by themselves.
There are risks and costs involved so be aware of these before you move forward. Spend some time coming up with a plan. It’s easy to react and spray ineffective chemicals, or hire some bed bug company that’s cheap. After a few weeks and repeated infestations it could be a very frustrating approach. Some of the steps and info below from a bed bug company that knows how to eliminate them will help you understand how to get through the process.
How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs – Syracuse Bed Bugs Tips
Let’s take a moment to understand that bed bugs can be a very difficult pest to get rid of. There are 8 stages in the life cycle of a bed bug, and they must feed in between each stage of development. That’s right – by the time you notice them biting you they have already been feeding off you or some other host.
No matter how many times I deal with these pests it always gets me slightly grossed out to think of them all feeding on me at night. Oddly, I have been in the worst infestations you can imagine but I have never had them myself, so I can only imagine and see the horror in my customers’ faces when they talk about it.
Bed bugs feed in groups, so look for that when you’re wondering whether you have been bitten. Also check out my other post on how to identify bed bug bites.
Important Facts About Bed Bugs | How to Get Rid Of Syracuse Bed Bugs
Before we begin, read some of these bed bug facts. It’s always important to know your enemy before entering battle. Take the time to evaluate your pest and be sure to start a plan on how you are going to prepare your family or other people in the home for the upcoming steps.
- They only come out in the dark or at night.
- These pests are almost invisible to the naked eye until about the 4th stage of development
- Bites are almost impossible to detect or feel because they have anesthetic compounds in their saliva.
- Bed bugs bite in groups. The lower the stage of development the smaller the bite.
I would encourage you to do some more research. If you want to find out more about biology check out the recent article I wrote about how many treatments it takes to get rid of bed bugs and their eggs. Or you can get some further information from pestworld.org, as they are a resource in the industry that many Syracuse exterminators use to get information updates or resources.
IDENTIFY – Step One: Syracuse Bed Bugs – Article: “Can You See Bed Bugs”
So, I’m not sure whether or not you have identified the issue or not. Bed bugs can be very difficult to see. If it’s not obvious whether you have them or not you may be trying to figure out the bites you’re getting. If you know you’ve got an issue and want to get a good look at everything going on below is a great checklist. Bed bugs are much easier to see once they have had blood meal and have become engorged with your blood. Gross, I know. Remember, the early stages are small, and you need to be thorough. Take your time and go through every square inch.

Quarantine – Step Two: Syracuse Bed Bugs Exterminator Guide – Ref Article: : “Steam Bed Bug Treatment”
If you’ve read to this section on bed bugs, you have most likely found signs of them from above. Let me be the first to say sorry. The first thing would be to quarantine the area(s) you think are infested. Then the decisions about what you are going to do are the next step. If you are a Do-It-Yourself bed bug kind of person, then be aware of some of the recommendations below like Read The Label and don’t spread the issue. Of course, getting a professional to handle the process is not a bad idea. Just know we can help with questions as well so give us a call if you feel like there are some things you want to work out before moving forward.
ASSESS – Step Three: How to Get Rid of Syracuse Bed Bugs
Figure out what rooms you believe are infested and come up with a plan. You’re going to need to begin looking at cleaning the carpets and rugs for bed bugs and bed bug fecal matter. Be sure to assume the infestation is widespread, and be aware that living rooms, couches and recliners can be concerning areas.
QUICK WARNING:
Per Room Scam – This is when you get scammed by the per room guys. There are a few bed bug pest control companies in Syracuse that charge per room. 4 bedrooms and adjacent rooms are usually more than a whole house contract and then they guarantee just the room so it works out for them because they can just charge every time they come back. I never understood why someone wouldn’t want to treat every area possible on the first application and do it right the first time, but hey if you can get people to believe it’s only $149.00 for bed bugs then you can get your foot in the door and their wallets.
Start to vacuum and clean the floors like you’ve never cleaned before. The eggs, the feces and the byproduct of the shedding from these pests just need to be cleaned. Remember, you can’t see the eggs so when you’re cleaning you probably won’t see anything. That means just keep at it. Cover every square inch from top to bottom.
Continue Assessing – Step Three | How to Get Rid of Syracuse Bed Bugs
Once you’re done with vacuuming the bed bug eggs and looking for adults, start bagging up all the personal items. Anything you’re not going to use for the next 6 months put in the basement in sealed bags or in the garage. Don’t open them for the next 6 months and any bed bugs in the bags will die.
Next take all the linens and anything fabric and start the process of bagging them up. Don’t open them inside the house. Take them to a loading storage area and then move the bags one by one to the laundry room. From there open the bag and put in the washer or the dryer. Begin the process of washing and cleaning all the clothing. Any clean clothes should not be put back into the same bags or the same rooms until the entire process below is completed.
PREPARE – Step Four: Syracuse Bed Bugs Exterminator – Ref Article: “Preparing For Bed Bugs Post”
Ok, you are getting close. Don’t forget that you should be doing each step of the process for all the rooms of the house. The more thorough you are and the more areas you cover the better the results. In order to prepare for spraying and/or steam treatment move all furniture you kept in place a foot away from the wall. Make sure you take apart and remove all drawers in the dressers. Be aware once you spray you need to seal off the area and probably leave the home regardless of the chemical you have decided to spray.
KILL – Step Five: How to Get Rid – Syracuse Bed Bugs Exterminator Guide – Ref Article: “Bed Bug Heat Treatment”
Option 1 Spray
Looks like we are getting to the point where we are going to start killing some bed bugs. There is some concern about what type of chemical we are going to use. We use adulticide and we use an insect growth regulator (IGR). These will get rid of the eggs and reproductive cycles happening to insects with complete life cycles. Unfortunately, these products are restricted and only for use by a registered company and technician in New York State. I will tell you that I get a lot of calls from people that are desperate to find out what products to use.
A lot of folks ask about Crossfire or other products and if we can sell them something. We can’t sell it and products like Crossfire used to be available through amazon, but they were moving pesticides across state lines illegally so that whole thing has stopped. Guess what, there is a reason the products are restricted for use by the public.
Here’s a list of the types of products
- Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are the most common chemicals for Syracuse bed bugs. There has been resistance to them so be aware it may not work.
- Pyrroles like chlorfenapyr kill bed bugs disrupting their cells.
- Neonicotinoids damage the bugs’ nervous system. are man-made versions of nicotine. The answer to the resistant bed bugs.
- Desiccants are substances that destroy the bugs’ protective coating. Two examples of desiccants are silica aerogel (Tri-Die and CimeXa) and diatomaceous earth. These products can take a few months to kill off all the bugs.
- Foggers or bug bombs kill bed bugs, but they can’t get into cracks and crevices where these bugs hide. They can also be toxic to humans if you use them incorrectly. Read the label carefully. Leave the room before you set off a fogger. Don’t burn your house down!
- Plant oil-based products like EcoRaider or Bed Bug Patrolare less toxic than chemical insecticides, reviews are always great online but they have a hard time getting rid of eggs cycles and nymphs.
Happy hunting – but be aware the word guaranteed is thrown around a lot. Also READ THE LABEL – please read it. There is nothing worse than hearing from someone they over applied or misapplied with pets and children. Don’t put your family at risk or exposure. Over application is pointless and a health risk that’s worse than the bed bug problem or bed bug troubles you had in the first place.
Option 2 heat treatment
In this part you’re going to need a steamer. Go out and find one. Make sure it’s a unit that can reach 115 degrees and start steaming every square inch of the entire room and all the target rooms. Then do it again. Don’t miss a spot. Be sure your clothing is getting washed in hot water and the dryer will kill bed bugs even without washing from the heat. Be sure to run on the heat cycle! Use this checklist when steaming:
- Steam and wash any fabric in the room that isn’t going through the washer / dryer. Stuff animals, drapes etc.
- Steam the entire baseboard, room and cracks and crevices in the entire room and target rooms.
- Take bed apart and be sure to steam the entire bed.
- Remove all drawers and steam inside and outside of dresser. Turn upside down
- Don’t forget about the closets. Be sure there is nothing in the closets.
- Steam like you’ve never steamed before.
MONITOR / REAPPLY – Step Six: Syracuse Bed Bugs Exterminator – Ref Article: “Bed Bug Inspection”
So this is where the patience kicks in. I would sleep somewhere else for a few days and give the product a chance to work. I would keep an open mind when moving anything back into the room that you have about a 25% chance that you have killed them. Do a really thorough inspection of the area. This is just a percentage that I use after dealing with these pests for over 10 years. There is no statistic on success rates of individuals. Most people aren’t excited to share their bed bugs style with their friends. Before moving back in do another inspection.
CALL ENVIROPEST– Step Seven: How to Get Rid Of Syracuse Bed Bugs – Ref Article: “Bed Bug Exterminator”
If you’ve read to here you’re either deciding whether to call a pro after seeing the steps, or have tried without complete success. Remember these are just some guidelines and some ways to go through the standard process. Each and every service is different and of course we are available.
Be careful with what you’re using around your families and pets. Not only is it what you’re applying but how you’re applying it. Likewise, would be surprised to see how some people just start spraying and then it’s just over applied and these hazardous materials. Look at what is happening with round-up and the lawsuits with cancer. You could buy that anywhere; these are the same risks associated with what pesticides are being sold in Home Depot or Lowes. Whatever you choose for your bed bug problem, we wish you the best and please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.
