The Larder Beetle is a small, dark-colored beetle with white and black markings. This beetle is a member of the carpet beetle family Dermestidae; however, the Larder Beetle, Dermestes lardarius, can feed on a great variety of materials – not just carpets. They will provide any stored animal or plant products, such as leather, insect, bird, mammal specimens, cured meats, cheese, tobacco, and dried fishmeal.
Larder Beetle Description
The adult Larder Beetle is small (3-mm or 3/16 inch) with an elongate-oval body. It is dark brown to black, with a covering of short black hairs. In the spring, the adults are attracted to flowers where they feed on pollen, assemble, and mate. After mating, the female will search for an ideal place to lay her eggs. These beetles become pests when the adults enter houses and lay eggs. In homes, the eggs are deposited in lint accumulations, in-floor crevices, behind baseboards, and heating ducts.
Life Cycle of the Larder Beetle
The outdoor life cycle of Larder Beetles is regulated by the seasons. Once the process is occurring indoors, they will breed throughout the year. Eggs will often be laid in batches of 6-8, with the total per female being about 200. The larvae are dark-colored and covered with dark brown hairs. Larder Beetles have a life span of 30-90 days, during which the larvae pass through five or six stages. You can find the larvae in places that are not well lit. Once they have gone through the development stages, they will begin to migrate. It is during this migration that homeowners often notice the infestation. Looking for the right place to pupate, the older larvae will seek materials such as insulation, wood, or other semi-porous locations. The Larder Beetle pupal period lasts about 15 days. The adults mate soon after emerging. Adults will lay eggs near a food source.
Our Industry Leading Larder Beetle Extermination Method
We Start with a Thorough Investigation
This insect’s presence in the home may indicate a dead rodent between the walls, the chimney, or the crawlspace. Be sure to clean light fixtures of insects killed, remove dead animals from traps, check dog and cat food stored for long periods, and caulk all openings where beetles might enter when attracted to lights. Flies such as the cluster fly and face fly, abundant in the autumn, hibernate in-home wall voids, attics, overhangs, etc. Many die in inaccessible places and become a prime food source for Larder Beetles. To prevent infestation, store foods in insect-proof containers when returning from the grocery store. These containers are commonly made of glass, aluminum, or steel, ideally with screw-type lids. Larvae have been known to bore through materials, including tin materials for pupation. Routinely inspect stuffed animals for infestation. These beetles will infest collections of insects, animals, etc., if not properly preserved.
Common signs of Larder Beetle infestation include:
- Fecal matter that looks like pellets
- Holes in food storage items
- Larder Beetle hairy larvae will shed skin
