Biology & Signs Of Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bee damage can be tough to spot. Different types of wood can cause hide the damage. Also, the holes that carpenter bees chew can look like man-made drilling. It’s what is inside that is extremely concerning. They burrow out the wood and create extensive damage. Our staff is trained to spot the start of infestations, carpenter bee test holes, and active versus inactive areas.
One important clue that alerts most homeowners in the sawdust that falls from the active infestation. If you see sawdust on your deck or around your home, be aware this byproduct is the result of an active infestation.
Carpenter bees drill a vertical hole in fascia boards, barns or any exterior wood. They then continue the hole before taking a right turn—that’s where the female will lay her eggs. After the eggs hatch, the larvae will chew their way out of the wood, causing more damage. They repeat this process every seven (7) weeks.
EnviroPest carpenter bee exterminators will also spend the time to see what areas around your home are causing infestations. Whether it’s a wooded area or your neighbor’s house, we are trained to inspect all structures in and around your property for a complete carpenter bee service.
Why Carpenter Bees Are Getting Worse Every Year
New York State is blessed with many species of trees. Softwood and hardwood trees both allow carpenter bees to flourish. This habitat, a long-lived life cycle combined with milder winters, has contributed to large increases in carpenter bee infestations locally.
For a company to properly treat carpenter bees, they should return to your property multiple times throughout the warmer months. This is due to the egg cycles and continuous increase in generations year over year—one-time pest control treatments for carpenter bees are not recommended by experts in the past control industry.

Carpenter bees get their name from their ability to drill through wood and nest in the hole. Their drilling creates a near-perfect hole, approximately 1/2 inch in diameter.

What to Look for When Hiring a Carpenter Bee Removal Company
- Check to see if your company is licensed and insured through the state of New York.
- It’s also essential to check how long technicians have been with the company. In too many organizations, many staff is seasonal and unlicensed.
- Technicians should have experience with carpenter bees.
- Keeping up with industry equipment and the latest eco-friendly products is essential. Check with industry affiliates such as the National Pest Management Association for memberships and recommendations.
- Biology and safety are crucial. Entomologists on staff can be an essential credential.
- Choose a company based on its quality of service, not the price—research user reviews and testimonials but also the person on the phone should be just as knowledgeable as the staff that arrives at your home.
- Be wary of the salesman. Often the staff that arrives are not as detailed and thorough. We don’t use field sales. The same staff who inspect your home are the same staff who do the work.
- Check if the company implements an Integrated Pest Management plan of action. These guidelines can be the difference in gaining long-term results and speak to the company’s knowledge as a whole.

ASK THE EXTERMINATOR:
How dangerous are carpenter bees?
Carpenter bees are large and very intimidating when you see them flying around. They have attracted to sugars such as sweet drinks. One surprising trait of carpenter bees is that they very rarely bite or sting. If they are cornered like sat on or grabbed in your hand, they will sting, and make no mistake, and it can be very painful. Carpenter bee attacks will result in very large swelling, and you should seek urgent care or a physician if you have an encounter with a carpenter bee.
After carpenter bee extermination, will I see them?
We can get rid of carpenter bees nesting sites and eliminate most of the population. Unfortunately, we can’t get rid of them in the air. If you live around an area with a high population, we will encourage you to hire a company that agrees to maintain your property. This will ensure that our preventative and carpenter bee pest control processes are successful.
Is it okay to kill carpenter bees?
Many customers are concerned about killing honey bees, and this is another important question. The types of products used are very important for this process. Other companies use products that will hurt other types of bee populations, and we focus specifically on Eco-Friendly treatments.
Are the materials you are placing in my dwelling harmful in any way to my family or my pet’s health?
Our treatments are in no way harmful to the health of anyone in your dwelling. Our pest applications are meant to eliminate pest-specific problems without any harmful side effects to you or your pet’s health. We follow our Eco-Friendly program, and you can refer to your technician for further questions. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact your local office. They will be glad to assist you.
Do we have to stay out of treated areas?
We usually recommend staying out of a treated area for a few hours. Although the materials will dry in under an hour, active bees returning to nesting sites will find they cannot return and could become aggressive. Bees, in general, will feel threatened, and although we can get rid of nesting sites, bees returning after a day’s forage will stay around until finally flying off to find new habitat.
You can also use the onsite chat feature, Free Pest Inspection form on this page, or our online contact form to get in touch with us. Whatever your pest control need, we are happy to help you eliminate it.

Your technicians were so polite and considerate. They put covers over their boots and wore a mask the entire time. It was a pleasure to have them working in my house. They carefully explained what they would be doing, and when they finished, they explained what they had done. I would be happy to have them come again!
